On April 17th, tax day, SEIU joined other Change to Win unions at the Downtown Post Office to inform taxpayers of Wal-Mart's burden on our community.

Union members distributed leaflets with information about Wal-Mart avoiding to pay corporate income taxes on the stores they own, while dumping their employees into taxpayer funded Medicaid programs.

Voting is a Right!

voter ID
Senator Lena Taylor and Senator Spencer Coggs
have lead the fight to protect the right to vote.

Last November, too many Wisconsin voters were confronted with an election system that was woefully unable to handle the high number of voters.  Instead of directly confronting real problems with the current election system, Republican leaders in Wisconsin have, sadly, fabricated an urban legend of widespread voter fraud to push a voter photo ID bill that will create unnecessary roadblocks to the ballot box for all voters.  Not satisfied with merely making voting more difficult, Republicans are now shamelessly trying to repeal Wisconsin's nationally renowned same day voter registration system.

Wisconsin leaders must address critical problems, including more and better trained poll workers and early voting opportunities to reduce lines on Election Day.

SEIU Supports the Jauch/Sherman Proposal to Increase Nursing Home Rates
home care worker with client
The Jauch/Sherman Bill rightly targets at least 50% of the rate increase for direct care nursing home staff.  The only serious nationwide research shows that health care staffing levels are the only variable that directly improves the quality of patient care.

Worksite Fliers*-- Print worksite fliers  to distribute on the job

What began as a rarely used response to unforeseen emergencies,is now part of a deliberate strategy in many hospitals to operate with less direct care staff.

Mandatory overtime endangers patients and has become one of the primary reasons many nurses and other health care workers are leaving the profession.

Extensive research shows that nothing is more important for quality of care in nursing homes than adequate staffing.  Yet Wisconsin's regulations on staffing levels are 30 years out of date and our nursing home staffing levels are among the worst in the country.

Residents in nursing homes are suffering as a consequence of short staffing and SEIU members and our allies are standing up to do something about it.
